Art, Blockbuster and the City Cinema
Barbora Kucsa Prágerová has been at the helm of Metro 70 cinema for nearly a decade – a venue that has been bringing cultural life to the city of Prostějov for over half a century. The brutalist cinema draws audiences into its underground auditorium and its glass-walled cinema café, using both spaces for film screenings and for building a community of film lovers.
In her work, Bára focuses on running a city cinema as a living cultural landmark – a place for film premieres, events, discussions and shared experiences. Under her leadership, Metro 70 has undergone significant programming and audience development and has consistently ranked among the most successful city cinemas in the Czech Republic. The cinema holds the international Cinema of the Month title, awarded by the Film New Europe platform in 2019.
For her work at the Prostějov cinema, she was included in the Top Women in Global Cinema list – a prestigious selection of figures who significantly shape the current landscape of cinemas and film culture. The director, who took the reins at just twenty-five, now serves as Vice-Chair of the Czech Association of Cinema Operators and is also active internationally – among other roles, as a juror of the Europa Cinemas Label section at the Cannes Film Festival, to which she was nominated in 2021 by the Europa Cinemas organisation.
